Victor Meirelles de Lima is nothing less than a South American icon. To mention his name in conversation is to discuss one of the most accomplished creators of art in all of Brazil. He was not always so famous, however. His life began humbly in 1832 as a son of two Portuguese immigrants in what is know Florianopolis. Victor was a poor boy, known to amuse himself during school by crafting landscapes and puppets. This, according to historians, was how Victor eased the chronic boredom he felt when faced with things he had no interest in.
A true prodigy of the arts, Victor studied at the Fine Arts Imperial Academy at the tenger age of 15. Soon after he departed for Rome to display his artistic talents on a new and grander stage. By 1861, Victor could be seen in Paris exhibiting his masterworks at the prestigious Salon festival. It was here that Victor unveiled his much celebrated painting “First Mass in Brazil” to a captive audience.
These and other achievements led to the creation of the Victor Meirelles Museum Florianopolis, which is actually the house in which he was born. The museum established in January of 1950, when it was officially recognized by the National Historic and Artistic Patrimony Institute. This paved the way for the depth of Victor's work to be housed inside of the museum, which recently celebrated its 50th year anniversary in 2002.
The aforementioned Institute is responsible for the upkeep of the museum as well as the coordination of various tours that allow guests to enter and witness the artwork inside. The museum itself, while small, showcases a remarkable collection of this iconic artist's work. In addition, selected works of other, related Brazilian artists are housed for viewing at the Victor Meirelles Museum Florianopolis.
Those wishing to visit the museum can attend guided tours. They are held Tuesday through Friday between the hours of one and six in the afternoon.
