Sun bath in calm Sambaqui Beach
Beach of Sambaqui as it is popularly known, the word samba or tamba means “oyster shell” and qui or quire means “to sleep”. The two words are combined to call Sambaqui which means a cemetery in the sense that extensive deposit of shells, remains and skeletons have been lodged here providing clues about the presence of primitive inhabitants here. The beach actually consists of four beaches together called as Sambaqui. The beach lies in the south side of Ponta dos Sambaqui (Sambaqui tip). Each one of the small beaches has its own name. The beach measures roughly 1.2 kilometres in length and up to 25 metres in width. The beach is about 17 kilometres from the centre of the City of Florianopolis. It is a traditional fishing ground for locals and a calm place to relax for the tourists. The local community still fights to preserve the old customs and traditions by promoting religious parties and folk dances. The community is nicely organized which is densely busy and offering abundance of nature and culture. The beach is primarily used for fishing, recreation and lodging (very limited in the form of residences).
Breathtaking in appearance Sambaqui beach is beyond the typical landscapes of 19th and 20th century presenting a panoramic view of the North Bay and the continent. This is one of the reasons why many bars have come up in past few years serving various varieties of beer against in a picturesque backdrop. Surrounded by beautiful mountain ranges it is a treat to traveler’s eyes. The beach is characterized by yellow sand of medium texture, tranquil waves and clear waters offering a soothing experience to the visitors. The beach is an excellent place for the families to hang out during the day time as the waters are calm and ideal for children to get into waters and have fun. The waters are considered perfect for bathing. The restaurants apart from offering typical cuisines also serve fruits of the sea including oysters, shellfishes, squids etc. At night, bars offer music along with beer. Visitors can also listen to folk music at some of the bars here. But the tourism is restricted to local boundaries here meaning it does not have any hotels and the infrastructure needs improvement. But Santo Antonia de Lisboa which is next to Sambaqui beach offers good options of stay. To reach the beach by car, follow SC-401 for about 17 kilometers (if coming from center city) to Santo Antonio de Lisboa beach and follow signs to Sambaqui beach from there.
