Historians believe that the first Spanish and Portuguese explorers set foot in Riberao da Ilha Villa Florianopolis in or around 1506. By 1748, colonization had begun to occur across the land, leading to the establishment of the epic Azorean civilization. It has been speculated that over 50 separate colonies once inhabited this region.

Today, Riberaro is comprised of a handful of small beaches, each with tranquil waters and thick, white sand. But what truly makes Riberaro special is the manner in which it has preserved elements of Portuguese culture. While much of Brazil has broken off in its own direction, this area has made it a point of staying true to its roots.

A walk to the beach, for example, evokes memories of ancient Azorean culture. Houses, as they do in Portugal, typically have pink colored walls and windows bordered in white and yellow. Most stunning of all, however, is the way in which women crouch by the windows, enjoying the view in a quiet manner. This is extremely typical of the way women behave in Portugal and Riberao is one of the few places that it can still be observed in Brazil.

“It's amazing. If you were to blindfold a Portuguese citizen and airlift him to Riberaro da Ilha Villa, he or she would have no idea that they had left home. Everything from the structure of the homes to the layout of the streets is a spot-on match. What I found most fascinating was the Church of Nossa Senhora Lapa. The Catholic tradition is alive and well. The Puppet Museum is another must-see if you want to see the historic documents that illustrate the history of this area. Absolutely fascinating place.”
