Go wild at Ribeirao da Ilha beach
Ribeirão da Ilha beach is one of the beaches of island of Ribeirao. Ribeirao da Ilha is one of the first places to be inhabited in Florianopolis and the very first community of the state was formed here, during the 16th century by the Carijos Indians. The name of the Ribeirao Island originated from a small river flowing through that area. The river was called as ribeiracô in the regional language and from it the word ribeira was derived. This river was born from the fort waterfall situated in Santo Estevao.
Historians states that the first attack made by the Spanish and Portuguese navigators was in 1506. Navigator Sebastião Caboto came to Ribeirão da Ilha by crossing the Atlantic Ocean, after twenty years. He anchored his ship in the Port of the Ribeirao. From 1748 to 1756, he played a major role in the settlement of people on the island. At that time nearly six thousand acorianos had inhabited the Ribeirao island and according to some authors some cinquenta couples also had established themselves in that area. Today, some parts of the south coast of Brazil are still occupied by traces of the Portuguese settlement.
A stroll across the Ribeirão da Ilha gives a chance to get glimpses of the acorianos culture and customs. Few defining traces of the original and intense form of this culture are still preserved till date. As soon as tourists arrive here, they are welcomed by houses with high walls embedded with white & yellow or green & blue windows. The curtains also have noteworthy prints which attracts the attention of the onlookers. Women leaning over the windows are a common sight. They chat with each other and interact with the passer-bys. Most of the men are involved in the fish trade and are busy throughout the day pulling fish nets in order to bring back food for the house.
Other attractions of Ribeirão da Ilha are the Acoriano Casario church and the Etnologico Museum of the Ribeirao island. The church is dedicated to Our Lady of Lap and the museum houses documents which provide a vivid picture about the history of Ribeirao da Ilha.
Situated at a distance of thirty six kilometers from Florianopolis’s center, Ribeirao da Ilha is an integration of small number of beaches with thick sand and calm waters. If travelling by car, south exit must be taken and following indications will take you to Ribeirão da Ilha.
