Go camping and trekking in Praia dos Naufragados.
Praia dos Naufragados beach is located towards the extreme south of the island. The beach offers vast sea and thick sand, perfect for sun bathing. Along with fishing, tourists also enjoy camping and trekking in Praia dos Naufragados.
Praia dos Naufragados came into limelight after an incident that happened at the beach. In 1753, a group of acorianos immigrants got inspired by the Portuguese and decided to head towards the Rio Grande Do Sul in two ships. But unfortunately, an unexpected storm hit the coast of the Island of Santa Catarina which resulted in the wrecking of the ships. The ship was damaged and the vessels were punctured. Seventy seven people survived the disaster, out of which some continued on their way towards the Rio Grande Do Sul and some of them stayed back on the island.
After the second half of 19th century, a lighthouse was built on the tip to guide ships to the shore. The lighthouse was inaugurated on 3rd May, 1861. The tower of the lighthouse was white & circular. It measured up to thirty meters and was build six meters above the sea level. Later the height of the lighthouse was increased to forty two meters. The ruins of this lighthouse, especially its platform, still exist today.
The Island of Araçatuba is located in front of the coast of Praia dos Naufragados, where the church of the Lady of the Conceição de Araçatuba was built in 1744. Praia dos Naufragados beach is forty two kilometers from the center of Florianopolis. The path to the beach goes through the mountain, which takes the traveler through the tour of nature where beauty of nature can be encountered very closely.
The beach is very popular with surfers. It offers good quality waves and only experienced surfers are advised to go out in the waters for surfing. The waves come from both right and left which are fast and powerful in nature. The bottom of the waters is sandy and thus serves no danger as in the case with rocks. The normal length of the waves is 50 meters which goes up to 150 meters on a good surfing day. The direction of swell is south and wind direction is us usually north. The swell starts at 3 feet and works its way to more than 6 feet also. The tides are usually rising and falling.
The beach can be reached via easy trail from Caieira da Barra do Sul. The beach is usually empty on weekdays and moderately crowded on weekends. As with other beaches of Florianopolis also, care must be taken to protect your belongings and to behave cordially with the locals.
