Praia dos Ingleses – A beach with wonderful sand dunes
Praia dos Ingleses is one of the few beaches of Florianopolis whose original denomination has never been changed. The English translation of Praia dos Ingleses is Beach of English. There are many versions of stories as to why it was named such. According to the first version there was a shipwreck of English pirates and they took refuge on the tip of the land to the extreme northwest of the Island of Santa Catarina and they started calling that as Ponta dos Ingleses and the beach as Praia dos Ingleses. The other version of the story says that people of English origin were the first occupants of the beach and thus named the beach as Praia dos Ingleses. The community of the beach of English was integrated as a district in 1958 and now being one of the tourist places of Florianopolis. The population of the community is now approximately 15,000. The beach was once popular for fishing yielding as many as 80,000 fishes in one catch but has gone done considerably now. The beach extends to 4.8 kilometres and is about 650 metres wide. The beach is located at 36 kilometres from the centre city and about 45 kilometres from the airport. The beach is next to Ponta dos Canas, Cachoeira do bom Jesus, Praia do Santinho and Bravo beach.
The beach is known for extensive forts along the beach, long waves, fine white sand dunes and crystal clear pleasantly warm water. Praia dos Ingleses is a beautiful beach, one of the reasons why it is one of the greatest tourist centers of south Brazil. The dunes that separate Praia Santinho from Praia dos Ingleses are a natural wonder. It also boats an excellent infrastructure that has good roads, numerous hotels, banks, restaurants, health clubs, general services and lots of urban buildings. Praia dos Ingleses offers leisure, sports, nocturnal music, strolls, camping, housing and much more to its visitors. No wonder why it is frequented by adjoining Argentineans and other foreign tourists.
Praia dos Ingleses is also popular with surfers as it offers good quality, fast, hollow and powerful waves. Normal length of the waves is 50 meters but goes up to 150 meters on a good day. The swell starts at one meter and reaches up to two meters also. Another popular sport here is sand-board skating, a sport favorite to Florianopolis.
The beach is well served by various means of transportation. If going by car, just follow SC-401 to SC-403 which takes you to Praia dos Ingleses. The bus service is provided by Canasvieras Company with a good frequency of buses.
Praia dos Ingleses has lots of good pousadas (inns) in its vicinity namely Mare Alta, Emanuelli, Residential Luar, Favreto and Moradas Ingleses. The list of hotels includes Praiatur Hotel, Costa Norte and many others.
