Mocambique beach also popularly known as the “Great Beach” since it is the longest beach in Florianopolis over 5 km. People also call it Mocamba in colloquial terms. To get to Mocambique from downtown Florianopolis visitors have to take the road called Rio Vermelho from northern area of island and then head from Santinho towards Rio Vernmelho which is paved until one hits the mains access. One of the unique features of this beach is its depth which increases suddenly not too far from the shore. The water is also relatively cold but not too much to bother swimmers and surfers.

Macambique beach is a magnificent piece of natural wonder with crystal clear waters and breathtaking views with a backdrop of mountains. Add to this the tranquillity it offers compared to other beaches of Florianopolis which are heavily crowded. The locals too are very hassle free and affectionate adding more fun to the experience. Not one of the best beaches for surfers but it does get powerful waves frequently, some to the extent of 12 km long and some surfers enjoy the inside waves here. The surf frequency is 150 days a year which is considered good. The wind direction is usually west while the swell direction is east, southeast and northeast. The swell starts from around one metre and can go up to two metre. There is a small hospital for animals where toucans, penguins, and many other birds undergo rehabilitation and are then released into their habitat again. It is a good experience for nature lovers.

Macambique beach is also good for camping. There are not too many restaurants but there are two bars, one located right near the tower and other about fifty meter north from the tower going up on the beach. The first bar is quite crowded most of the time while second one is relatively less crowded. Overall Mocambique is an ideal spot for those who like a serene place to spend their holiday
