Located in the center in the municipal market, the House of Alfândega, or “customs house” is a building that begs to be seen. Standing tall above it’s surroundings and built in the tradition of early style architecture, many people wander to the front door out of curiosity for what might be inside.

The buildings date all the way back to The Golden Age of Manaus. The stone used to build the House of Alfândega was carefully imported all the way from Scotland. At the time of construction, Manaus was quite a wealthy country, and no expense was to be spared!

If you’re planning in Manaus by boat, you will likely be coming by way of the Amazon River. If you had done this same journey a century ago, you would be made to get off the boat at the Port of Manaus, and go through the customs house to declare your reason for traveling to Brazil.

This is somewhat different today, for you still must go through customs, but it is not quite as strict as it once was. In fact these days it is actually quite an enjoyable experience. The inside of the customs house is home to many antiques from Manaus’ vast history. As you pass through the high ceiling, beautifully designed corridors you will see paintings from the famous Manaus rubber boom, the war period right up to present day Brazil art.

What is not exactly fun about going through customs is getting your bags searched. This is customary and they are very thorough with their checks. Bloggers online have said they will remove everything, including, even, your dirty laundry. The customs agents have been known to confiscate questionable items and even arrest people on the spot for anything outright illegal. Therefore, do not attempt to pull any fast ones! Chances are you wont get away with it!

Once you are in Manaus, the House of Alfândega is the place to go for any questions or concerns you may have involving local law, policies and even directions. General tourist information, maps, and brochures can be found inside. This can prove to be quite helpful as it is likely that you have many questions concerning this new country you are visiting.

The old House of Alfândega is quite a beautiful sight to see. Bring the camera with you as you pass through it. The interior is just as intriguing as the outside suggests.
