Don't visit Floripa before you know your Florianopolis History.
Florianopolis History is a subject that anyone traveling to the area should read up on. Knowing the history of a state before visiting will assist you in appreciating the culture you will be experiencing. Florianopolis, in particular has some great history behind it. The influence of different and distinct cultures has really sent waves through their society.
Florianopolis history begina with the European settlement of Santa Cararina island in 1542. Spanish settlers came and set up villages and towns all around the island
The Portuguese came to Santa Caraina in 1675 and took control of the political scene. Most of these settelers colonized the coastal region. It was actually them that established Florianopolis as the capital city. It was then that large numbers of European immigrants began pouring in and didnt stop until the mid 19th century.
The Germans began arriving in 1828. This period marks a very important time in Florianopolis history. They came as peasants who had their eyes set on Brazil in hopes to get their own land. This, unfortunately, did not manifest itself the way they had hoped. Germans became isolated in rural, low-class communities for generations. Little contact existed between them and the other people of Brazil. The German citizens kept their traditions and customs in tact in their new Brazilian home. They even continued to speak German among themselves. This all changed in the 1942 when Brazil declared war against Germany. German immigrants were forced by law to learn to speak Portuguese and abandon their German traditions in favor of a ”Brazilian way of life.”
Even in presant day, German influence in Florianopolis, Santa Caraina remains very strong and visible to anyone visiting the land. A great many of the small towns still contain lots of signs of the German culture. Towns can even be found where German is the prodominant language spoken.
Later, immigrants from Italy, Poland, Japan and the Ukraine began to arrive. This resulted in the establishment of thousands of small, family run farms.
The first Hurricane that hit the land came in March of 2004. Brazilian meteorologists named it Catarina, after it state it hit.
Now that you know a bit more about Florianopolis history, you’re bound to understand the cultural trends you experiance much better than before. The food you eat, music you hear and people you see should have more significance to you as you find yourself tracing their origns back to the original settelers of the land.
