The Florianopolis Fort Santo Antônio de Ratones began to be built in 1740. It was erected according to the plans laid out by the original project leader, Bigaider Jose da Silva Paes. The fort served as a crucial piece of defense for the island of Santa Catarina. During the 18th century, it was armed with two sets of guns and 14 pieces of artillery.

Now in ruins, the fort belongs to Ministry of the Navy and serves as a national historical landmark. The Navy realized, however, that the fort would not stand much longer in the shape that it was in. If they were to keep it open to the public, they needed to get it restored. And so it came to be that the management and restoration of The Florianopolis Fort Santo Antônio de Ratones by the Federal University of Santa Catarina. This transaction first took place in 1988. By 1993, the fort was fully restored and looked better than ever. It has not had to go through any serious renovation since.

The Florianopolis Fort Santo Antônio de Ratones is located on the beautiful island of Grande Ratones, in the North Bay, Florianopolis, Santa Catarina. Actually getting to the Fort is almost as fun as being there. To reach the island you must take a schooner tour beginning at the North Bay harbor. The sailing boats take tourists around the area showing them different points in the city and eventually reaching the Fort.

If you are planning on visiting the Florianopolis Fort Santo Antônio de Ratones, you will need to know its hours of operation. The Fort is open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM during the summer months (end of December to early February). If you will be visiting during any of the other months, the Fort is open from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM.
