Come explore the Florianopolis Fort Sant´Ana museum!
The Florianopolis Fort Sant´Ana was erected in 1761 under the guidance of Military Project Engineers José Custódio de Sá and Sargent Faria. Tall and majestic, the Fort sits at the union of the North and South Bays. It was crafted to protect the Town of Our Lady of Desterro, current Florianopolis, and the vessels entering the bays. In its hay day, the fort served as great strategic position in many a battle.
Armed with six cannons pointed out toward the sea, the Florianopolis Fort Sant´Ana did a lot for the state of Florianopolis. In one famous battle in 1893, she took on heavy fire from the rebel army during the Revolution. Though the situation looked grim, she held strong and eventually emerged victorious.
In the early 1960s, the fort had to undergo restoration. It is said that more construction companies bid for that contract than almost any other one in Florianopolis history. Once it was fully restored, the government spent long hours debating whether to open it as a tourist attraction like so many of the other Florianopolis forts, or if they should maybe do something a bit different with this one.
After some ideas were tossed around, it was decided that this fort would be a military weapon and artifact museum. The museum is open to the public and is something any history buff should take the time to check out. Inside are very knowledgeable guides who will show you around, explaining to you the different artifacts and what historical significance they all hold.
The fort turned museum is an excellent place to bring the kids and family. You will no doubt see the other three forts in Florianopolis once you arrive there. Most of them offer the same basic tour. As they say, once you see one you sort of see them all. This one, however is truly different than the others. The vast array of weapons and old world artifacts are quite amazing to study.
