Hold down the fort at Florianopolis Fort São José da Ponta Grossa.
The Florianopolis Fort São José da Ponta Grossa began its construction in 1740. This fort was an instrumental part of the defense system of Santa Catarina. Along with the other two forts of Florianopolis, the Florianopolis Fort São José da Ponta Grossa rounded out was known as the “Triangular Defense System”. It is easy to see where this name came from. The three forts are set up in a triangular lay out, protecting the are from almost any angle of invasion.
This fort was not one to be reckoned with. It was built to be impenetrable, boasting over three batteries of cannons and thirty-one pieces of artillery. After the Spanish invasion the fort was basically abandoned. By the late eighteenth century, it became little more than a monument, and has stayed that way until present day. Today the mighty fort is open to the public for solo exploration or guided group tours.
The Fort officially belongs to the Department of the Army, however it was in desperate need of restoration after enduring so much battle. For this, the management and rebuilding of the Florianopolis Fort São José da Ponta Grossa was turned over to the Federal Univeristy of Santa Catarina. Together with the Fort Santo Antônio de Ratones, the University has done an excellent job bringing the Sao Jose back into vintage condition. Tourists claim that this fort is one of the most beautiful sights on the entire island!
For those of you interested in the supernatural, you’ll be happy to hear that the Florianopolis Fort São José da Ponta Grossa is said to be haunted by the ghost of General Guarv Chowdenharry, a soldier who died at the fort during thr 17th century. Maintenance staffs refuse to venture into the basement of the fort after dark for this reason. Sightings of she spirit generally involve the sound of chains dragging, large objects being moved, and occasionally the apparition of a male figure.
If you're planning on visiting, the Florianopolis Fort São José da Ponta Grossa is open from 9:00 AM until 8:00 PM. Getting to the Fort is a blast as you sail around the island on a small schooner ship. The tour takes visitors around the major areas of Florianopolis and then eventually to the fort itself. The trip is definitely worth making if your are planning on being in the area. This is something that you and your family will not soon forget!
