Canasvieiras beach is one of the oldest beaches of Florianopolis, Santa Catarina. The beach was earlier known as Praia de Canavieiras englobava de Cachoeira pois. Fishing and fish farming were popularly associated with Canasvieiras beach earlier. However agriculture was also one of the main occupations of the local people here. But it has gained a reputation for bathing beach since the beginning of the century and of late quality health clubs although fish farming still exists at low scale. The beach is also credited with setting up the first health resort back in 1930’s itself. The beach is nearly 2.2 kilometres long and up to 80 metre wide. The beach extends to Cachoeira do Bom Jesus (a district) in the north and Ponta das Morretes in the south. Canasvieiras beach is known for its crystal clear waters, soft sand, calm waves and the smoothness of declination of the depth of the sea from the shore.

Canasvieiras beach is also popular with surfers for its excellent quality of waves although they are not so consistent. The direction of the waves is towards right and the beach bottom is sandy. The waves are fast, powerless and fun to surf in. The normal length of the wave is 50 metre which is same even on a good day. The swell direction is east and northeast whereas the direction of the wind is west, south, southeast and southwest. The swell from east is the best for surfing. The swell starts from less than 3 feet and holds onto 3 feet after that but the east side provides swells of up to 10 feet also during storms. Visitors are awestruck by the immense beauty and tranquillity that exists in the beach. But, there will still be lots of bikini clad snobbish Argentineans and classy Uruguayans on the beach. There are companies which run booze cruises around the seaside and one of them called Scuna Central is good one offering a 5 hour trip around the bay area and surrounding islands.

The beach is almost empty on weekdays and moderately crowded on weekends especially in summers. Beware of rocks and pollution when surfing or swimming in the beach waters. Also behave warmly with the locals and do not get into arguments or break into their waves otherwise you might be taken out of the waters. Also, do not leave expensive stuff like car stereo or GPS devices in the car as they may be stolen.
