Barra da Lagoa is a lengthy curved beach located only five minutes from the centre of the city and can be easily found. Visitors can get the road from Lagoa da Conceicao and go past Rendeiras Way and reach Barra da Lagoa beach. The beach gained recognition only in 1989 and before that it was not even mentioned in the government maps, it was considered to be part of the great beach Mocambique. But Barra da Lagoa was officially instituted in 1990, put on map and given access to general public. The beach was named after its local community which is very old.

The beach is a favourite with sailors looking for both wind and waves. The beach runs almost 650 metre and is oriented perfectly with respect to the wind creating nice waves and offering great surfing experience. It is for this reason the beach has got a reputation with kite surfers also. Adding to the list of lovers are fisher folks who are indigenous to fishing and who are descendants of Azorean colonists. One of the things surfers like about Barra da Lagoa is its tranquil ambience combined with a community that is laid back.

Many visitors come to Barra da Lagoa for gliding and hang-gliding also. The Morro is a hilltop which is a preferred launching site for gliders. The beach known for its clear and tranquil water with low salinity and fine sandy dunes is a traveller’s paradise. No wonder why so many tourists from all parts of the world throng the beach and it is on their list of not to be missed beaches. The local community population is about 8,000 and has a rich folklore celebrating ‘Tainha’ Party every year. Tainha is nothing but the name of the main fish caught in Barra da Lagoa in huge numbers during the harvesting time which falls in the months not having “R” in them which are May thru August.

For visitors who are looking to stay near Barra da Lagoa beach there is no dearth of good accommodations and one would be overwhelmed with number of accommodation available for rent. Barra da Lagoa has some of the finest restaurants and probably the best in the east coast beaches of Florianopolis. The beach is overly crowded on weekends so avoid weekends and rather prefer to go on weekdays which are rather calm.
