Armaco Beach – A complete fun place for everyone
Armaco beach located next to Pantano do Sul beach is the most wonderful beach when compared to other beaches of Santa Catarina Island. The beach is filled with fine, white sand extending up to 3200 meters and the width of the beach is 250 meters. The waters are lucid and waves are calm in some areas and vivacious in other parts, creating a perfect environment for the surfers. The beach has moderate waves which make them safe for bathing. Because of the fishing nuclei concentrated in this area, the beach is packed with huge fishing boats. Fish is supplied from this fishing beach to the surrounding cities in bulk.
The name of the beach means Scaffolding or trap for whales and it comes from the drudgery past, which was not fond of, but it helped to boost the progress of the island by leap and bounds. The whales of this region were fished for oil which was used for illumination. Besides the oil, the meat and the fat were also utilized for food. This mass hunting lead to the extinction of most of the whales species, out of which only the forte frank specie is being preserved and in turn, they have become the chief source of income from tourist. The ruins of the fishing company can be viewed, which brings back memories of the past ecological crimes. The Armaco beach is 25 km away from Florianopolis’ center.
The other importance of Armaco is that it has a significant archaeological sight, The Church of Saint Anna which was constructed in 1772. It is also Santa Catarina’s oldest chapel, which has been serving the community since many years. Before fishing, the members and harpooners of the whaleboats crew heard the mass and confessed in this church. After that, the boats which went into the sea were blessed by the priest. But the church no longer contains the original architecture because of the reforms made in 1838 and 1948. The fishermen leave their boats on the Island of the Logwood, which is also another popular place to be visited. The ecological tourism is encouraged too; and the proof is the Municipal Park of the Lagoon of the Peri. This park is filled with mountains and basins, a sanctuary for the nature lovers.
To meet the growing crowd of frequent tourists, Armaco beach is served by many popular restaurants specializing in seafood, especially near the square of centennial Azorian Chapel. During summers, the bars, restaurants, and inns buzz with nocturnal party-goers. The number of local inhabitants nears 8000.
